The increased risk of thrombosis in patients who undergo a splenectomy is important. About 22 000 splenectomies are still conducted annually for all causes in the United States and splenectomized patients have a 2
2-fold increased rate of being hospitalized for deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism (Kristinsson et al, 2014).
